Kythnos Island Katafyki Cave
The Katafyki Cave in Dryopida Village on Kythnos Island
On the edge of the traditional village of Dryopida on Kythnos Island, there is one of the largest caves of Greece, the Katafyki Cave. Efforts have been made to make it accessible to tourist for years, but still it is not fully accessible for visitors as almost continually works are in process.
The Katafyki (Katafigio - Refuge) Cave took its name apparently because it was used for centuries as a refuge for the inhabitants of Kythnos Island during each intrusion. I hope for the mounting and lighting operation to be finished so it is opened to the public. It is a shame one can not admire the extraordinary decoration of this miracle that nature created on Kythnos Island over thousands of years.
